Vintage Royal Doulton King Henry VIII & 6 Wives Toby Mugs, Large, Complete Set
This is an impressive set of Royal Doulton large porcelain character jugs featuring King Henry VIII and all six of his wives. 1978 -Anne of Cleves D6653. 1980 1st Wife - Catherine of Aragon. Demoted for bearing no son, to Princess status. She and Henry shared one daughter together, Mary. King Henry divorced Catherine because she couldn't give him a son. 2nd Wife - Anne Boleyn. King Henry was smitten with Anne, but she refused to be with him because he was still married to Catherine. At this point, King Henry broke away from the Roman Catholic Church and formed the Church of England. Anne was later beheaded for treason and adultery for trying to have King Henry's mistress removed from court. 3rd Wife - Jane Seymour.
Only days after Anne's death did King Henry marry Jane. Jane and King Henry have birth to a baby boy, Edward VI. Jane died while giving birth and her remains are buried along side King Henry's.
4th Wife - Anne of Cleves. After being a swinging bachelor of two years, King Henry decided to get married again and was to make a choice between Anne and her sister Amelia.
King Henry requested portraits of both the ladies and found Anne to be most attractive. However, King Henry was not impressed with Anne and tried to null the wedding. Anne accepted a divorce and settlement. 5th Wife - Catherine Howard. At this point, King Henry was obese and unable to walk, which led his 19 year old bride to have wandering eyes.
She was later accused of being promiscuous and executed for treason and adultery. 6th Wife - Catherine Parr. She was the sixth and last wife of King Henry VIII. She was reluctant to marry him-he had had his second and fifth wives executed-but saying no to a proposal from the king could have had serious consequences for her and her family.
She was able to exert a beneficial influence on the king during the last years of his reign and she outlived him. Each jug measures approximately 7" tall, 6-7" wide and has a unique handle designed to reveal more about the character's personality.
